The Sun is a spinning ball of hot gas about 1.3 million times bigger than the Earth (by volume). It formed about 4.6 billion years when a cloud of gas (mostly helium and hydrogen) started to collapse due to gravity. High pressure at the centre of the collapsing ball of cloud caused the temperature to rise to about 15 million°C
